Avoid Rear Crashes with Chevrolet's Forward Collision Alert

ST. LOUIS, Miss. - You know those drivers who zip from lane to lane, tailgating every vehicle that stands in their way? Yes, we're looking at you. Well according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, those eager folks are responsible for the one in four rear-end collisions that are reported to police each year. Fortunately for all of us, Chevrolet was quick to create a solution to improve driver awareness and safety.

Drivers can avoid rear crashes with Chevrolet's Forward Collision Alert, a technology that will notify the driver if they are following another vehicle too closely or if they are seconds away from a crash. Forward Collision Alert is currently available on select 2015 Chevy models, including the Traverse, Equinox, and Silverado. Some models are even equipped with a Front Automatic Braking technology that is able to automatically slow or stop the vehicle under certain circumstances, like if the driver does not respond to an alert.

Avoid Rear Crashes with Chevrolet's Forward Collision AlertDepending on your Chevy model, the Forward Collision Alert will be installed in one of two places. The system will use a radar located in the front grille area OR it will have a camera mounted behind the windshield in front of the inside rearview mirror. Regardless of the way it is installed, drivers will be able to avoid rear crashes with Chevrolet's Forward Collision Alert. Here's how the technology works; once the system is activated, a green icon will appear when a vehicle is detected ahead. The icon will change to amber when the driver is getting too close to the vehicle, then will immediately turn to a red "Collision Alert" with rapid, high-pitched beeps if the driver is approaching the vehicle too quickly.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, forward collision technology can help to prevent up to 879 fatal crashes each year! However we do have to remember, Chevy's Forward Collision Alert is a technology that was developed to enhance, not replace, driver awareness!
